http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/local/gun-found-in-safe-in-hampshire-police-officer-s-home-1-4642460

And as a serving Police Officer he'd have had the basic's of Firearm's law, and all the anti drivel, drilled into him when he joined...

Still a 300 fine (actually prosecution costs) and loss of his job isn't 5 years banged up is it!
I wonder if he actually couldn't open the safe or simply lied to try and get away with it, and who informed on him would be interesting to know too.

Well I think it's fairly obvious he knew what was in the safe!

Quite.

He knew, but tried to claim he couldn't get to it, it's still possession and 5 years should have been the tariff.

And the soldier whom it seems almost certanly didn't know he was in possession got locked up.

I'd love to know what the court considered to be the 'exceptional circumstances' in this case for not imposing the mandatory five year minimum.
