Has anyone handled one of these?
My understanding is that the top half of the gun is actually from an L85A1 that has been upgraded to A2 spec by H&K and then they just clip on the TMH from an L98A1, so it's semi-auto only.
Is that right? _________________ Steve.

Seen but not handled. Perhaps Librarian_UK knows?
It looks like the L85A2 to me with the flash eliminator and I'm pretty sure it has the same cocking handle, just no change lever. I'll ask. Get some pickies?
Cheers

Thanks Paddy,
How has the flash eliminator been adapted to not accept a bayonet?
The Army think it's okay to give cadets a semi-auto rifle but not attach a bayonet?
Cheers

We were "officialy told" that it was made oversize and had the locking slot removed, but it was not demonstrated. |

Anyone tried? I know someone with one.
Cheers

Obviously I haven't tried it, but I have heard it was an MoD requirement that it not accept the bayonet, as cadets were buying them privately and playing silly buggers with the rifle.
I was just interested to know how H&K have put them together, because I've heard from a friend of mine who is in a position to know that it is an L85A1 upper, converted in a similar way as for the L85A2 and then they simply bolt on an L98A1 TMH with altered markings. If that's true, then there are a lot of L98A1 uppers floating around without TMHs somewhere, and the L98A1 is section 1 only... _________________ Steve.

The weapons are completely new, not converted A1s. A2 has a different hammer to the A1. A2 upper has the mounting holes for the LSW bipod, and no signs of modification/rempoval of cocking handle rail. A1 didn't have the annoying hole for the operating rod either
Most of the A1s in service were way too buggered to be conversion fodder.
What has happend though, is A1 sights have been fitted to DPs, but live weapons have the two possition battle sight... |

For those not aware of the terminology, I assume Paddy means they've fitted the L98A1 iron sights to Drill Purposes rifles and the L98A2 has the 'SA80' series iron sights which have two apertures.
Maybe they'll get SUSAT's when/if the regular Army gets the ACOG.
Steve, as per the L85 and L86A2's, they'll be destroyed is my best guess.
Cheers,

H&K isn't manufacturing them from scratch, that much I'm certain of, but they've only converted 200,000 or so of 380,000 L85A1 and L86A1s, so there are plenty of spare top ends for them to use to make the L98A2. They are refinished, bolt assembly replaced, forend replaced etc. so they would certainly look new.
I'm pretty sure the top halves are from L85A1s converted to A2 spec (because they aren't going to be drilling gas ports into L98A1 barrels and replacing the gas block/front sight tower), but I'm not too sure about the TMH, whether it is a converted L85A1 or L98A1 TMH. Some people say one or the other, but the person I know who should know the answer to the question says L85A2 upper with slightly altered L98A1 TMH clipped on. (But he wasn't actually in the factory when it was being done, so...)
If it is what he says it is, then there are L98A1 uppers floating about, if it is what some others have said, the L98A1s are just in storage somewhere. Like you say, I would have thought they would be too buggered to be converted, but then we are only talking about the TMH, not the whole rifle.
I know the MoD won't sell firearms to surplus anymore, but that's what lobbying MPs is about, the question is whether there is anything to lobby them about first.
It's not that hard to make a TMH even if they have swapped them over. _________________ Steve.

Has anyone who is in the Cadets got access to an L98A2, above it says they've got new hammers in them.
My L98A1 has what appears to be a trigger mech which is identical to an L85A1, auto sear, the lot, just no selector lever.
Have they modified it uniquely for the L98A2 or is it just the same as an L85A2? I'm guessing the latter. _________________ Steve.
