Quote: | A Northumbria Police officer has won the prestigious WWF Wildlife Law Enforcer of the Year national award for his work involving wildlife crime investigations.
Force wildlife crime officer Paul Henery was picked by a panel of wildlife enforcement experts from a shortlist of candidates from across the UK.
He has led a number of operations resulting in significant wildlife seizures and has been instrumental in successfully prosecuting countless cases across the region. This includes an egg collector who is now being considered for an ASBO - the first time such an order has been considered for wildlife offences.
Badger baiting, House Martin nest destruction, the shooting of birds and illegal trade of elephant ivory are just some of the cases he has been involved with and he has also been involved in the recruitment and training of a group of local wildlife crime officers.
Based at force headquarters at Ponteland PC Henery, 42, has been with Northumbria for 18 years - 12 years as full-time wildlife officer.
He said: "I am surprised but honoured to receive this prestigious award, particularly at a time when wildlife law enforcement is taking giant leaps forward in effectively protecting our wildlife inhabitants which the public care so passionately about."
The award recognises the outstanding work by individual officers in cracking wildlife crime over the last year. He was also nominated for raising awareness among regional and national media and took part in the BBC series Animal 24/7, being broadcast this autumn and highlighting the plight of the Hen Harrier.
As well as community based projects, PC Henery has designed a plan to protect a pair of breeding Montagu's Harriers. This is the first time they have attempted to nest in this country for 40 years.
David Cowdrey, Director of WWF's Wildlife Trade Campaign, said: "This award recognises the hard work and dedication of this officer in clamping down on wildlife crime in Northumberland over the last 12 months.
"It also sends a clear message to these criminals that police are able to tackle wildlife crime which is pushing some of the world's most vulnerable species towards extinction."
Chief Superintendent Paul Weir of Northumbria Police's Operations Department, said: " We are delighted that the excellent work Paul carries out on behalf of the force is being recognised at a national level.
" Wildlife crime is an important aspect of the force's work and Paul is to be congratulated for helping to raise the profile of crimes critical in the conservation of wildlife not just in our region but the world." |

Doesn't mention that he is a talented wildlife artist. Nor does it mention that he was one of the two controllers of Operation Artemis, widely criticised for it's attempts to coerce landowners into providing Police access to land which they would not otherwise have in order to seek evidence for the existence of wildlife crimes (against Hen Harriers) which were not known to have taken place, an operation which seriously damaged the relationship between the Police and moorland game keepers.
On the whole he has definitely done more good than harm, but Artemis was a major, major cock up in damaging landowner and gamekeeper relations with Police http://www.nationalgamekeepers.org.uk/library/resource/48/

Sadly IMO the police are no longer bothered about maintaining "relations & goodwill" |
