How much are 17HMRs? I would have thought it about usable on fox. Having said that, 22 Hornet is cheap to load for : 12-13 grains gives a 35 grain bullet about 3000fps going by the Lee book. Better value than 30 grains in 223 R for a 35 grainer at 3900fps I would think. Of course there's all that bothersome handloading....
Nice to have a thread on here about shooting instead of what the police oracle has read in The Police Oracle!

The .17HMR are around 16p ea.
My .223 bangs a 50gr out at 3203fps with 22.5gr VVN133 - most effective and accurate. Havent bothered with lighter heads, cant be ar**ed with the faffing about.
I love reloading, most satisfying. Esp when the kids and wife are getting my back up.
Sako 25-06's are around 85p for factory load, so loading my own about halves the cost.
Depends how much shooting one does, might pack in the 25-06 reloading and just use factory ammo now I know the drop and drift. My stalking can result in no shots at all apart from a zero check...might be something to do with the smell!
now now Neil Mac, no need for a slanging match, our 'police oracle' is a very handy source of info, both on and off the forum.

Yeah, seems rather a conversation of 'I agree, oh so do I. Me too, how about that  A bit like your thread on when did you last go shooting. In the last board J got a prize for the most dull threads but this year, i think there may be some competition!!!
FWiW I don't think .17HMR is man enough for the job, except at very close ranges, 50-80m. I also agree with you on the soap powder issue and deer. That they smell you and see movemnt much quicker than you or I can and they also have that little extra (6th?) sense which tells them you're about, but as soon as the close seasons on....
