I've been waiting until some actual facts come to light before posting:
Timeline of events.
Most of his guns came from the US.
There's no evidence he ever held a licence, although it's possible he did in the distant past as records from pre-1998 are very sketchy (when the current licencing system came into force). And apparently he was never a member of the local gun club either. But apparently he had accelerants, weaponry and a police car available for a spur-of-the-moment mass shooting. Bizarre. _________________ Steve.

It would be banned, the design isn't that relevant, it's a "variant" of an AR-15. The Armi-Jaeger AP74 is considered a variant of an AR-15 for example. You can't get around it with a slight redesign, it has to be (a) different and (b) have a different design history. It's more about intent that physical characteristics. _________________ Steve.

As I thought, thus why the wk180 is still legal (based on the ar180b) and the type 81....
I noticed firearms over 10000 joules so 50 BMG's are banned too. So looks like 416 Barret will be the go to long distance round there soon. The bits about gender impact and native Canadians was comical as it acts like women and native gun owners don't exist. If Trudeaus government didn't exist you'd have to make it up..... |

Neighbour reported mass shooter's domestic violence, weapons to police
Okay, I maybe understand his girlfriend didn't press charges, but:
Quote: | "If you tell them that he may have illegal weapons, should you not go and check it out?" she asked. |
YES.
And not just one neighbour, but two neighbours, and he didn't just tell them he had them, he actually showed them the guns. And bear in mind this is at the same time the RCMP were going on about how wonderful the firearm licencing system is because it AUTOMATICALLY tells you when the person is licenced when they run the name through CPIC, which they must have done as it is SOP.
The mind boggles. _________________ Steve.

Canada's gun control laws are only as good as its neighbour's
So apparently he got one of the guns in Maine, although the description sounds iffy:
Quote: | The local Nova Scotia gossip magazine Frank interviewed Wortman’s father in April, who told the magazine that Wortman had ordered at least one handgun to a friend’s address in Maine “then smuggled it back into the country.” |
I suppose technically it could have been an intrastate private transfer, but any transaction involving a dealer would have to be in-person.
Quote: | In many states, it can be as simple as obtaining a state hunting license, which is possible for Canadians. |
No that's not correct. First of all, Canadians are exempt from the hunting licence requirement and second of all, you have to establish residency in the State to get State ID, which is quite tricky since the REAL ID requirements came into force. _________________ Steve.

Killer obtained one gun from friend's estate.
So, it's becoming pretty obvious that he never was licenced at any point. And was never a member of a gun club either. I suppose we don't know exactly what gun it was he obtained in Canada. _________________ Steve.

RCMP release details.
So two pistols illegally imported from Maine; an AR-15 that at some distant point in the past was legally sold in California (long since been banned there) and a Ruger Mini-14 he got from the estate of someone he knew.
The Colt LE carbine iirc was banned in California back around 1990 which I think was before that model was even on the market, I suppose it could have been bought by a police officer. Colt did make some bullet button models for the California market but the LE carbine was banned by name at some point.
As far as I can tell, he shot pretty much everyone he shot with the Glock, so how exactly banning a variety of semi-automatic rifles would have made a jot of difference is open to question, quite apart from the fact that he got three of the guns from outside of Canada. _________________ Steve.
