Nope, I'm not kidding: http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2013/08/21/pol-cp-harper-nicholson-arctic-shooting-rangers.html
As I recall the MoD had huge numbers of them but they were destroyed.
More information.
So it all seems to boil down to the fact that Colt Canada (aka Diemaco) has to supply it after the design has been chosen, and no-one trusts Colt Canada!
Like it says, who cares about licensing rights for the No 4. Seems silly. Any number of other bolt-action rifles like the Mauser as well. _________________ Steve.

This sounds like a classic civil service boondoggle. Any number of perfectly good .308" bolt action rifles are available off the shelf, the problem is that most of them would be made by American companies. If you are only in the market for 10,000 rifles, is there any point spending money setting up your own production line? Would it really compromise Canadian national security if it bought 10,000 Remingtons or Rugers? Of course not, but civil servants would rather end up with a Canadian made rifle for $5000 than an American one for $500. Good job it's only money. |
